Mamata Banerjee will contest from Bhawanipur in Assembly Election 2016

$

Rumour was that Mamata Banerjee may contest from two constituencies in West Bengal assembly elections 2016 but all speculations are over as the Trinamool Congress supremo will contest from Bhawanipore. Earlier it was said that Mamata Banerjee may contest from Bhawanipur and Burdwan.

CPM and Congress are jointly requesting former Supreme Court judge Ashok Kumar Ganguly to contest from Bhawanipur as an Independent candidate.

Mamata Banerjee won from Bhawanipur assembly constituency in 2011 West Bengal assembly election with a margin of 54,213 votes. Since 2014, a swing towards BJP is observed among Bhawanipur voters. In 2014 Lok Sabha polls, BJP’s candidate led the Bhawanipur assembly segment by 185 votes and in 2015Kolkata Municipal Corporation elections, BJP won two of the eight wards in Bhawanipur.

The above result is definitely encouraging for BJP and the party will select a strong candidate.

Future of Left Front – Congress alliance in assembly election 2016

$

Both CPI (M) and Congress state level leaders have expressed their willingness for alliance in the forthcoming West Bengal assembly elections 2016. Rahul Gandhi is also in favour of the alliance still there is no official stamp from either party on the alliance. Election Commission of India will announce the election schedule for the state very soon. The question is – what is the future of the alliance?

On 28 February, Trinamool Congress MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay conveyed an interesting news about the alliance. Sudip Bandyopadhyay said "While returning from New Dehli, I suddenly met Soniaji (Gandhi) and asked her about a probable alliance...She instead asked me whether any such alliance was happening. She told me that no such news has reached her so far," the TMC leader told reporters on the sidelines of a function here. "It is apparent that such an alliance is not taking place. There is some campaign regarding seat adjustment at the state- level between the two parties, but as per my knowledge there is no alliance."

West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee president Adhir Chowdhury, Pradip Bhattacharya, Deepa Dasmunshi, Mausam Benazir Noor, Abhijit Mukherjee and many other senior Congress leaders want the alliance.

Senior CPI(M) leaders including former chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and party state secretary Surjya Kanta Mishra have openly spoken in favour of an alliance with the Congress.
